What is Sound Therapy?
Sound therapy is a non-invasive, natural healing process. It utilizes specific instruments to create sound vibrations similar to your brain’s own waves of relaxation, lulling both body and mind into deep rest and rejuvenation.
Sound healing has been used by cultures throughout history to heal the mind, body and soul. Studies have demonstrated that it can reduce stress, anxiety and depression by dissolving blockages and encouraging the body’s own natural healing processes.
The human brain is composed of thousands of cells vibrating at different frequencies, measured in hertz (Hz). Generally, these brainwaves can be divided into delta, theta, alpha and beta waves; with Delta, Theta and Alpha usually associated with sleep while Beta being more active during concentration or focus.
A therapist uses their hands to strike different sound bowls or instruments, producing vibrations synchronized to the frequencies of your brain waves. This synchronization helps restore your brain’s healing frequency, stimulating powerful hormones and other natural chemicals within your body that promote relaxation, calmness, and healing.
Brainwave Entrainment, also known as Brainwave Therapy, was recently studied and found to help participants combat cognitive functioning deficits, stress, pain, headaches and premenstrual syndrome. Furthermore, this technique reduced fatigue and upped energy levels significantly.
Sound therapy uses sounds such as gongs, singing bowls, tuning forks and drums to induce relaxation in your brain. It helps the left and right sides of your brain sync up, helping you focus better on goals while feeling emotionally balanced.
Music can influence your brainwaves in a similar manner, activating alpha waves (8-14 Hz) that stimulate serotonin production, helping to alleviate depression, anxiety and sleep issues.
One popular method to achieve brainwave entrainment is binaural beats, which utilize two distinct tones played in each ear. These sounds can be listened to through headphones for a trance-like state that encourages neural synaptic connection.
Brainwave entrainment, also referred to as “brain-wave mediation,” is an effective treatment option for people suffering from anxiety, pain, insomnia or tinnitus. It may also benefit those experiencing other ailments like headaches and depression.
Studies have demonstrated that these effects can be seen after just an hour-long treatment session. Furthermore, these effects are not just temporary; they may last months or even years with regular maintenance of treatment regimen.
These effects can be achieved by restoring balance to your nervous system, stimulating the immune system, relieving inflammation and releasing endorphins, serotonin and melatonin into your body – among other essential chemicals essential for good health.
Sound therapy consists of sound baths and music-based meditations, which you can find either online or at a nearby sound healing studio. A skilled therapist will customize the experience according to your individual needs, addressing any emotional, physical or spiritual obstacles you might face.
