Facilitating Sound Baths combines my experience as an artist and dream survivor, my diverse studies in complementary and alternative healing practices, and my conviction that deep listening gives us access to improved focus, expanded creativity, and more human connections. Most people report a “restful sleep” after a sound bath, which often turns into a calm, centered feeling the next day. When it starts on Saturday, February 27, Sky Ting, the super-cool yoga studio on the edge of Chinatown, will be another of Martinez’s regular places around town to enjoy sound baths. A sound bath can help you get into a reflective, self-healing state, bring peace to your everyday life and further promote healthy sleep.

But every Wednesday, sound practitioner Stephanie Rooker and yoga teacher Sarah Capua transform it into a place of movement, meditation and sound healing in their Sound Body Yoga class.

What is a yoga sound bath?

Some healing sound practitioners not only help the body relax, but also argue that sound baths may be able to promote physical healing. Perhaps the best part is that you don’t have to do anything but show up in comfortable clothing and pick up the sounds around you while you lie peacefully. Some musicians use sound-healing instruments alone, while others combine them to create complex and fascinating soundscapes and an immersive sound experience. Some people prefer individual sound baths where they can have complete control of the session, while others enjoy the community of a group experience.

If you want to use sound baths as therapy, make sure you know that they should be used as a supplement to other therapies, not as a substitute.

What does a sound bath do to your body?

You can either take part in a personal sound bath (usually in a group) or listen to audio at home. Most people feel refreshed after a sound healing session as their worries are released, their emotions are regulated, and their mind is calmed down. Before a sound bath, these study participants tended to rate their pain higher than afterwards. A sound bath can be meditative and relaxing, and often the benefits depend on how you start the session.

The Sound Bath practitioner can share some best practices with you to ensure that the experience is as good as possible for you and other participants.
