What to Expect at the AMTA Conference 2019
The AMTA Conference is an annual gathering where music therapists from around the globe come together to share, learn and network. It provides a great chance for networking with colleagues, making new friends and listening to inspiring speakers!
Over the four days of the conference, there are a wide variety of topics presented – from cutting-edge methods and interventions to motivational talks on finding your dream career path. There truly is something for everyone at this conference!
At CMTE 2018, there are plenty of workshops to attend. These provide attendees with an invaluable opportunity to learn about various topics not normally included in other CMTE courses.
This year, there were several sessions on ADHD and music therapy as well as one on interviewing skills for new music therapists. While these can be beneficial to all professionals in the field, recent graduates who are beginning their job search should find these topics especially helpful.
This year, there were many sessions focusing on LGBTQ+ issues. Music therapists should be aware that people of all ages and backgrounds identify as LGBTQ+.
Some of the sessions explored how to effectively address these issues within music therapy settings, as well as exploring some of the difficulties people may experience due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. Some sessions approached these matters from a clinical standpoint and others took an historical research approach.
There were also sessions that focused on being an effective music therapist and self-care for a successful career in music therapy. These are all essential topics for music therapists to be aware of and be able to discuss with their clients in an expert manner.
Music therapy is still not widely accessible to everyone in America, which can present a challenge for music therapists who wish to provide their services in rural areas.
Due to this, it is essential for therapists to consider the accessibility of their services. In this discussion, we will review current literature on this topic and suggest ideas for increased access to music therapy in rural areas.
Support can make all the difference in someone’s healing journey. In this discussion, we will examine some of the most commonly utilized support methods and how to best serve our clients’ needs.
Support can be invaluable when times get tough and make your job more enjoyable, which in turn benefits your patients. This session will explore various forms of support such as meditation, mindfulness and exercise, plus ways to connect with other music therapists in your area.
