What You Should Know About Cupping Therapy

Cupping therapy is an ancient Chinese technique that utilizes suction cups to stimulate the flow of qi, or life force, throughout the body. Proponents claim it reduces pain, improves circulation and speeds up cell repair.

The practitioner begins by prepping the area to be treated by wiping away any excess oil or dirt. Then they apply cups on specific points on the body like acupuncture points or meridian lines, creating a therapeutic atmosphere.

As cupping commences, practitioners may experience feelings of heat or pressure in the treatment area. These sensations are normal and it’s essential to remain relaxed during this process.

Once the cupping has been finished, you should be able to move around freely. Your practitioner can apply some massage oil on top for additional comfort and relaxation of the skin.

Once your session has been completed, you should notice a light pink or slightly lighter red mark left behind on the treated area. This indicates stagnation of blood and qi in that area and indicates that additional work needs to be done to release blockages.

Brures and discoloration are also commonly experienced, though these should fade after about seven days. It’s best to cover any red marks if you plan on going swimming or taking a vacation as these may attract attention from others.

Before beginning cupping therapy, it’s essential to get a complete health history. This includes discussing any current medications and medical conditions with your provider before scheduling a session. If you have a pacemaker, liver, kidney or heart condition or are on blood thinners, then it may be best to postpone cupping until those circumstances change.
